Precious Metal Recycling: How to Recover Ruthenium Trichloride?

Recovering ruthenium trichloride waste involves several key steps. Initially, the ruthenium trichloride waste is dissolved in an appropriate solvent to form a solution. Subsequently, impurities and other metal ions are removed from the solution using precipitation, filtration, or ion exchange techniques.

In the solution, ruthenium ions are transformed into metallic ruthenium through reduction reactions. This is achieved by adding reducing agents, such as hydrogen, or through electrochemical methods, namely electrolysis. Selecting the appropriate reduction method and conditions is crucial for improving the recovery rate and purity of metallic ruthenium.

After the reduction reaction, solid metallic ruthenium precipitates and is separated out by filtration or centrifugation, followed by washing to remove residual impurities. The dried metallic ruthenium is further purified and solidified through a melting process.

To obtain high-purity ruthenium metal, additional refining steps, such as zone melting or electrolytic refining, are undertaken. Through these steps, ruthenium metal can be effectively and efficiently recovered from used ruthenium trichloride, contributing to precious metal recycling.
